Cheesy Beacon (or: Why I'm a pathetic peripatetic.)
Mmm... cheese...
I must say that I like the new cheesy beacon a lot. Except... I use the beacon when I'm exploring as sort of a destination I wend my way towards. I veer all around, sometimes never reaching the beacon, but I use it to sort of guide my wanderings.
I do have one minor complaint. Not even a minor complaint. A complaintlette: The new cheesy beacon, because of it's continuous, inexorable pulsing, makes me feel pressured to get where I'm going. My whole "Oh, I'll wander this way, I'll wander that way, maybe eventually I'll head towards the beacon" style of exploring is now laced with a five second pulse of "come to me... come to me... you must come to me..."
Like I said, not a true complaint, but interesting from an interface point of view. I used the old marker to keep my bearings, but didn't feel any urgency to actually head towards it. But the cheesy beacon's pulse... it's like it's reminding me that I have somewhere to go. And since I don't really have to be anywhere, it's like an itch I can't scratch.
